U.S.: ITS STRANGE GYRATIONS NOT TO OFFEND ISRAEL
Past post suggests that Kerry has "screwed it up" because he has said that Israeli settlements are not legitimate. But then only suggests that they be "limited." Well, if they are illegitimate why only demand that they be limited? So what does Kerry think? Does he believe if the Israelis "limit" some settlements that makes the ones that are built "legitimate?"
The gyrations that the US government is willing to go through to not offend Israel and call them out of the illegality of their continued settlement construction on the West Bank while still trying to do the right thing in furthering the peace process negotiations that are again being attempted is absolutely amazing. Israel has no real motivation to change its current activities as long as their main supporter, the US, is willing to look the other way. There can be no resolution to the long-standing conflict until Israel gets the message that the settlements are illegal, there construction must stop, the occupation must end, and borders agreed on for a viable, sovereign, independent Palestine. Anything less would constitute an injustice to Palestinians, and the region would continue to be a powder keg of torment effecting the entire Middle East. Any US desire to win the battle for hearts and minds throughout the Middle East is sentenced to fail if we continue to slip and slide, empty promise and renege on this key issue.
