ACTION ALERT-URGE EPA TO DO THE RIGHT THING

FROM UNION OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS

ACTION ALERT
Urge the EPA to Move Ahead with Clean Fuel and Tailpipe Standards
Dear Keith,

Throughout the next week, supporters of clean air and clean cars will gather in Philadelphia and Chicago to weigh in on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) proposed rule to cut tailpipe emissions from our cars and sulfur from gasoline (the so-called "Tier 3" standards). We've made real progress cleaning up our cars in recent years, but passenger vehicles remain a top source of smog and other pollutants that fill our air and aggravate our lungs.

Reducing vehicle pollution and bringing cleaner gasoline to the pump is a no-brainer. Automakers, who are stepping to the plate to build a more fuel efficient fleet, are clamoring for cleaner fuel. Public health advocates are lauding the Tier 3 program's benefits for reducing cases of smog-induced asthma, and state clean air officials know that reducing sulfur and tailpipe pollution is the most cost-effective way to meet federally required clean air goals.

So, who is standing in the way? The oil industry and its allies in Congress. But the millions of Americans suffering the health impacts of living or working in areas with dirty air can't wait for the oil industry to stop putting their self-interest over the public interest.

No matter where you live, this is your chance to speak up on this critical clean air standard. The EPA needs to hear from the millions of Americans who want cleaner fuel and cars that pollute less.

Submit a comment by June 13, urging the EPA to finalize Tier 3 standards by the end of this year.

Sincerely,
Rachel Cohen
