Russian Foreign Minister: Snowden Never Entered Russia

Sergei Lavrov's comments about fugitive US whistleblower deepen mystery surrounding his whereabouts

ussia's foreign minister has said the surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden never crossed the border into Russia, deepening the mystery over his suspected flight from Hong Kong.
"I would like to say right away that we have no relation to either Mr Snowden or to his relationship with American justice or to his movements around the world," Sergei Lavrov said.
"He chose his route on his own, and we found out about it, as most here did, from mass media," he said during a joint press conference with Algeria's foreign minister. "He did not cross the Russian border."
According to WikiLeaks, which said it facilitated his travel, Snowden fled Hong Kong on Sunday morning to transit via Moscow to an undisclosed third country. He has applied to be granted political asylum by Ecuador, whose London embassy is currently sheltering the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Russian news agencies, citing anonymous sources, reported that Snowden had arrived in Moscow on Sunday evening and met Ecuadorean diplomats at Sheremetyevo airport while awaiting a Monday afternoon flight to Havana, from where he would travel to Venezuela. Snowden did not show up for the flight.
Passengers arriving on the Hong Kong to Moscow flight that was suspected to be carrying Snowden said they saw police activity and at least one black car drive up to the plane before they were allowed to disembark.
That fuelled speculation that Snowden may have been whisked from the plane before going through passport control. Olafur Vignir Sigurvinsson, an Icelandic businessman with links to WikiLeaks, told Reuters last week that he had readied a private jet to aid Snowden's flight from Hong Kong should the Icelandic government grant him asylum.
The US has warned Russia and China against helping Snowden as it seeks his extradition to face charges of espionage for gathering and disclosing documents outlining US surveillance programmes.
The White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Monday that the US was working under the assumption that Snowden was in Russia.
Lavrov lashed out angrily at suggestions that Russia was involved. "We consider the attempts we are now seeing to blame the Russian side for breaking US laws and being almost in on the plot totally baseless and unacceptable, and even an attempt to threaten us," he said.
Update: Edward Snowden is at the Moscow Airport. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Snowden will not be extradited to the United States, the AP reports: Putin said that Snowden hasn't crossed the Russian border and is free to go anywhere. Speaking on a visit to Finland Tuesday, he added that Russian security agencies "didn't work and aren't working" with Snowden. He gave no more details. Commenting on a U.S. request to extradite him, Putin said that Russia doesn't have an extradition agreement with the U.S. and thus wouldn't meet the U.S. request. He voiced hope that Snowden will depart as quickly as possible and that his stopover at Moscow's airport wouldn't affect bilateral ties.

Well, it does look like ES landed at a Russian airport. That territory technically may not be considered Russia proper. This sounds like the Russians are playing a game, but at least they feel threatened. My feeling is that ES has sort of disappeared which is really good for him. It means he's avoiding the media too. That's one smart steam-whistle blower!

I only fear that he might have been taken by the CIA or some operative of the US seeking him, who found him, and TRULY got rid of him. To them, the US, Mr. Snowden is an embarrassment, especially since his "outing" of illegal/crimina l/corrupt US surveillance on EVERYONE dovetails with the Bradley Manning trial.

But...I do not think that he has be abducted by the US because if he was in the company of Wikileaks people, they would have told the media that he disappeared without their knowledge. They would have made a huge stink!!

Wherever you are, Mr. Snowden, be safe, smart, and humane, as you have in doing this.

OK, so what's more amusing: that a foreign power keeps Snowden in order to get access to whatever he has, or that they give him back because they know it all already? It could've that it's the latter and their delaying tactics are an attempt to cover that up!

All Lavrov knows is what he reads in the media, sort of like the Obama administration. The Russians are very good students.

Y'know, if the US manages to capture Snowden and most people (other than the reactionary finks who support the corporate totalitarian state and who occasionally post here) come out to supporting him and demanding his release, just watch how completely the "people" are ignored by the vengeance-machi ne and how the cowed, cowardly, content-free US owner-media vilify him as their patsy-mouthpiec es!!!

The world has just flipped the bird to Congress, the NSA, and the White House.
This has become more riveting that the OJ care chase!

Imagine, ONE guy (count 'em one) stirring up this sort of shiite worldwide. Credit, respect, ES. You're giving them a run for their money. Love it and praying for you to stay free!

I think the Russians already know everything. The only "damage" Snowden has done is to the National Security State by making the American people aware that it exists.
