Texas GOP chair doesn’t want groups attacking the idea that gays ‘tear at the fabric of society’

The head of the Republican Party in Texas has defended the decision to prevent two LGBT groups from having booths at the state party’s annual convention in Fort Worth next week.

The Metroplex Republicans and the Log Cabin Republicans were both denied participation in the event due to the Texas GOP 2012 platform.

Steve Munisteri, chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, told Texas Public Radio that he doesn’t want any groups challenging the the party’s platform at the upcoming convention.

“The party, many conventions ago, adopted an informal policy that exhibitor space and sponsorship space would not go to groups that were going to possibly use the space to advocate for a position that is contrary to a major plank in the platform that a majority of delegate agree with,” Munisteri explained.

The party platform states: “The practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit. Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God, recognized by our country’s founders, and shared by the majority of Texans.”
