AMERICA ON RED ALERT
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday
that the international community must make sure those who use weapons of mass
destruction pay a price.
At today’s news conference in Jerusalem, when asked
if that statement included Israel’s ally the United States, The Prime Minister
responded “Above all, for those who know me, I am always consistent in the
application of my points of view.”
He went on to say that he had never seen any evidence that the U.S. had
deployed WMD so that “in the real world it is not an issue.”
However, the reporter who asked the question followed up by stating that the most extensive use of chemical WMD since World War I was
by the U.S. during the Vietnam war.
The reporter gave statistics on the usage of Agent Orange and napalm. He also mentioned the use of white phosphorus in Fallujah and the
U.S.’ employing depleted uranium shells and cluster bombs in its numerous wars.
The Prime Minister looked flustered. Then, reporter Leah Gelson from Akhbar-Al-Naqab, who
is the Helen Thomas of the Israeli press, stood on her feet. To say that she and Mr. Netanyahu have
had heated confrontations in the past would be considerable understament. Ms. Gelson took the occasion today to
bait the Prime Minister.
“Sir, your
credibility and the state of Israel’s credibility is at state. You cannot draw red lines, as you just
did, against nations using WMD, and not engage in reprisals. If you had qualified your remarks on
the use of WMD to limit it to the present you’d be in better shape. But don’t forget the use of unmanned
drones by the U.S. which have killed thousands of innocent civilians. They’re WMD.
"So, when are you
going to maintain your credibility and attack the U.S.?," asked the Akhbar-Al-Naqab reporter.
“You’re distorting
what I’ve said,” Ms. Gelson.”
“”You have no
credibility Mr. Netanyahu.”
The prime minister
evidently was ready to walk out of the press room but abruptly turned around
and virtually screamed at the reporter.
“You’ll see, you’ll see what I’ll do to keep my word, my credibility ,
the consistent application of my
points of view. You’ll see, you'll find out!" shouted Mr. Netanyahu.
Knowing that Prime Minister Netanyahu has been unpredictable
in the past in his dealings with the United States, and that he has rage control issues, Washington feared that there could be a confrontation between Israel and the United States that neither side really wants. But, In view of Mr. Netanyahu's remarks at the Jerusalem press conference, Presidential Press Secretary, Roger Gibbs, said that Mr. Obama had no choice but to order the nation on Red Alert.
