A Yale University professor was found dead in his jail cell a day after he was arrested following a domestic dispute.
Officers were called Saturday afternoon to the home of Samuel See, whose sister called to report the dispute between the English professor and his estranged husband, Sunder Ganglani.
The 34-year-old See had filed a protection order against the 32-year-old Ganglani, who returned to pick up some belongings but stayed for about two hours, police said.
When officers arrived and told See that his husband had also filed a protection order against him, police said the professor “became enraged” and fought with officers as they tried to take him into custody.
“He yelled that it was his house and that he shouldn’t be arrested,” said police spokesman David Hartman. “See fought with officers when they tried handcuffing him, (and) as See was led to a police car, he yelled to one of the arresting officers, ‘I will kill you … I will destroy you.’”
See was charged with violating a protective order, interfering with police and threatening in the second degree.
He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital to treat a cut above his eye, and then See was taken to the detention center shortly after 9 p.m.
Police said See was alert and communicating with authorities at that time, but judicial marshals found See non-responsive in his cell about 6 a.m. Sunday.
Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and See was pronounced dead.
Police said they don’t believe the professor took his own life, but no cause of death has been determined.
