TAKE ACTION:PROTECT THE ARTIC FROM BIG OIL

LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS

Friend,
polar bear
We all know that offshore drilling in the Arctic Ocean poses major risks for our precious ecosystem -- and that developing more dirty fossil fuels will only worsen the climate change that is already causing the Arctic to warm twice as fast as the rest of the world.
But instead of ending all offshore drilling in this special place, the Department of Interior is considering selling MORE leases to Big Oil companies to allow them to drill in America’s Arctic Ocean.
Last week, Interior Secretary Jewell gave a very inspiring speech articulating the Obama administration’s commitment to conservation in which she promised to take action “to leave our land, water, and wildlife better than we found it.”
Secretary Jewell acknowledged, “There are some places that are too special to develop.”
Our challenge is to convince Secretary Jewell that the Chukchi Sea in America’s Arctic is one of those special places that we just cannot afford to drill in. She’s ready to listen to us, but since Big Oil is pushing so hard to get these leases, we have to show an overwhelming amount of grassroots energy to make sure she does the right thing.
So we need your help to reach our goal of sending 70,000 messages by the November 18th deadline. Will you help us get there?
“Dear Secretary Jewell,
In your recent speech on conservation, you said, ‘There are some places too special to develop.’ We agree with you and urge you to protect one of our most special places, the Chukchi Sea in America’s Arctic Ocean, by rejecting any new leases for offshore drilling in its precious ecosystem.
America’s Arctic is ground zero for climate change. The indicators are everywhere: permafrost is melting, shorelines are washing away and forcing communities to relocate -- and we’ve seen record low ice cover in the Arctic Ocean.
If oil companies are allowed to fully exploit the oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean, it could release an additional 15.8 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere -- which would dramatically worsen the climate crisis. We can also see from Shell’s long list of setbacks and failures over the last several years -- coupled with the extreme risk for oil spills and further climate destruction in an already fragile ecosystem -- that the oil and gas industry is not prepared to operate safely in the Arctic Ocean.
Please protect our environment, wildlife, and planet’s future by saying no to more offshore drilling in the Arctic Ocean now.”
We started this year with a victory when we got the Department of Interior to investigate Shell’s dangerous Arctic operations and Shell ultimately decided not to drill in the Arctic at all this year.
Now that Secretary Jewell has laid out her vision for conservation, we have the opportunity to stop future offshore drilling in this special place. So thanks for joining us in taking action today.
Best,
Vanessa
