DON'T GIVE THE PENTAGON A FREE PASS

FROM FRIENDS COMMITTEE ON NATIONAL LEGISLATION

The Pentagon is barely starting to feel the effects of budget cuts, and some members of Congress want to keep it that way. Sen. John McCain has offered an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, a military policy bill, that would delay budget cuts to the Pentagon for a year.
Take action: Call your senators and ask them not to give the Pentagon a free pass on spending cuts. To call toll-free, dial 877-429-0678 and ask for your senators' offices by name.
We’ve been working hard for years to cut the Pentagon budget, but we can’t stop now.
For the past several months, we’ve been hearing more and more that communities are suffering from deep cuts to human needs programs. Food banks are facing more families than they can feed. Head Start has had to eliminate students from the program, keeping parents out of work or left with child care costs. And, to make matters worse, SNAP (food stamp) benefits actually dropped at the beginning of the month, leaving some recipients hungry.
Now is not the time to let the Pentagon off the hook. Call your senators today at 877-429-0678 urge them to vote no on the Sessions amendment to the NDAA. Because of the structure of the amendment, senators may not vote along party lines, so every call matters.
Here are some points to make on your call:
  • My name is ___________ and I’m from [city], [state].
  • I hope Sen. ___________ will vote against the McCain amendment to delay sequester cuts to Pentagon spending.
  • Pentagon spending has gone unchecked for too long, and the planned spending cuts are a good way to get its spending back under control.
  • Thank you.
