My response was "We're an intelligent life form? We're destroying our own planet."

Darwin's theories of evolution, natural adaptation, and survival of the fittest may need to be supplanted by theories not of how life has developed and progressed on earth, but how life has been systematically damaged and caused to regress by mankind's deliberate activities on earth. Short-term, intentional profit motivation should not trump long-term survival motivation, but it has in the runaway greedy capitalistic era we live in. The bottom line is now just profit in dollars and cents, it must be expanded to include quality of life, enhancement of community, and, yes, survival of natural forms of life for humans to deserve being called "intelligent", the end product of the survival of the fittest.
