If one Google's the name of eBay's chief, John Donahoe, numerous blog sites come up which have created for the sole purpose of criticizing and demeaning him. Since he has taken over the Mega Corporation, his policies have caused hundreds of thousands of small sellers to leave.
The people on the blogs complain that raising seller's fees, passing hidden shipping costs onto sellers, and programming eBay's search engines to favor big box stores, over little sellers, have made it increasingly difficult for smaller sellers to auction off their materials on the mega giant's web site.
But the criticism of Mr. Donahoe that has received the most publicity recently is allowing Trayvon Martin's killer, George Zimmerman, to make over $100K by selling an "original artwork" to a racist, but permitting the censorship of an artwork that was anti-Zimmerman in content. The content of the later was deemed hateful and degrading and so it was censored.
But Donahoe allows material that is totally beyond the pale, in terms of hateful content, which degrades humans. Devil worship with sexual activity, rape porn, even materials that romantically describe pedophilia are allowed.
Until caught by the British press, Jewish Holocaust artifacts were sold at auction. In connection with that one commentator observed, "E-Bay would do anything, sell anything to make a buck. Donahoe has no moral compass, he seems to be a sociopath."
Moral compass or not, Donahoe's annual earnings are $16m a year.
This reporter wondered if the most severe charge against the CEO, that he is ethically challenged, were true. How would I find out? I decided to snoop around Dartmouth College where he got his undergraduate degree in Business.
Business majors there are required to take a class in "Business Ethics." I was fortunate enough to find a Professor of Philosophy who was attached to the School of Business to teach the course. Professor Bertrand Russell remembered John Donahoe very well, very well indeed.
"Here you have this guy, a brilliant student in business administration courses, and the like, always earning top grades. Then he comes to my class where we apply the thinking of philosophers to contemporary business issues."
"You have to be intelligent to bring to bear say, Aristotle's Ethics to something like the topic of what business' core values should be. And you have to be able to think abstractly," said the professor.
"The reason I remember Donahoe so well is that he was very bright, and certainly could deal with high level abstractions, but he just wouldn't do it. He had no interest in it."
"I called him into my office, after he had gotten an "F" on the first mid-term and asked him to explain why he wasn't putting any effort into the class. He said that a fundamental concept, like the difference between Teleological and Deontological ethics, was 'crap.' That 'John Stuart Mill never had to make a payroll.'"
Russell then told me that Donahoe said that if he were teaching the class, he would only apply the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche to business ethics. He said that, in high school, he would skip classes and go to the library to read the German philosopher.
"'So look,'" he told me, all of the stuff you"re teaching in class about moral codes and principles, all of that went out the window a long time ago. The Superman of Nietzsche - and frankly I know I fit the description - is beyond good and evil. He makes up his own rules to suit his own needs. He doesn't let the herd - in your class the consumers, employees or business partners - influence his decisions.'"
Professor Russell then said "Donahoe made it personal. I'll never forget it. That's probably why I remember him so well. He practically yelled at me, 'Professor, you blindly accept the dogmatic premises of these moral philosophers you teach. Why don't you think for yourself?'"
"He told me he was going to drop out of my class so I wouldn't harm his GPA and that he'd go to the Business School Dean to petition for a substitute class," said the Philosophy Professor.
"I never saw him again. Now, in some situations, Donahoe is cited as an outstanding example of a Dartmouth graduate. He certainly is famous in business circles, making all of that money, being on the Board of Directors of so many corporations, getting appointments from Obama. You can't help but follow his career around here."
So, it turns out that John Donahoe does have a moral compass. It is what Nietzsche termed "ruthless warrior pride" as one of the crucial characteristics of the "superman" or the "Ubermensch" who is beyond good and evil.
The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
