On the same day George Zimmerman's original artwork went for sale on eBay, the company removed a painting done in memorial of Trayvon Martin.
Dear Keith,
George Zimmerman, who killed Trayvon Martin in February 2012 for the egregious "crime" of wearing a hoodie and carrying Skittles, has been busy. After being acquitted of Trayvon's death in 2013, Zimmerman went on to be arrested on charges of domestic violence battery and aggravated assault with a weapon. To help cover his legal fees, Zimmerman sold an original painting on eBay for more than $100,000. As if that wasn't bad enough, the same day Zimmerman's painting went up for sale, eBay removed a painting created by Michael D’Antuono in the days after the death of Trayvon Martin. Half of the proceeds from D'Antuono's sale were to go to the Trayvon Martin Foundation. With five days left on the auction, the price had exceeded $25,000 -- until eBay took the painting down, citing "hat e speech." It's horrifying that Zimmerman was able to exploit the fame he's gained from shooting a black teenager in cold blood, whereas a painting criticizing the systemic racism that allowed him to get away with it is classified as abusive. Tell eBay to restore the painting's listing and stop classifying anti-racist rhetoric as "hate speech."
