2 DIFFERENT COMPETING FORMS OF JUDAISM -DR. BILL HESSELL

Rabbi Michael Lerner presents a strong argument in his introduction to essay by Uri Avnery, head of an Israeli peace movement group, that there are today two very different, competing forms of Judaism, one that is true to the basic concepts of the belief system, and the other that is dominated by an aggressive Settler mentality that has taken over control of governmental policies, distorts the basic concepts of Judaism, and blocks any settlement being reachable with the Palestinians. There is a strong peace movement among many Jews in Israel, but their efforts are blocked by the Settler Judaism group which is dominant in upper levels of government, and which is supported by foreign groups, especially, unfortunately and unwisely, from the US. AIPAC is paramount among these, and their lobbying and financial strength draws a majority of our leading politicians to support their resistance to any just settlement of the Palestinian issue. There are many US-based Jewish peace groups trying to counter the hard-liners strength, so the US might become a true facilitator of peace in the region, rather than talking of peace but continuing to back policies which make it impossible. Jewish Voice for Peace, Americans for Peace Now, and Tikkun are just three of these groups, which desperately need more general support from Americans to be able to balance our involvement in the regional issue more fairly and allow us to become a true promoter of a peaceful settlement.
A JEWISH STATE WITH VALUES WOULD NOT BE OPPRESSIVE OR RACIST
