Miley Cyrus has been named in the Top 10 of Time magazine's Person of the Year poll.

Cyrus, who released her second solo album 'Bangerz' in October, has had a controversial 2013. In August, Cyrus twerked on stage at the MTV VMAs with Robin Thicke and subsequently clashed with Sinead O'Connor after the Irish singer warned her not to let the music industry "prostitute" her.

Lining up alongside Cyrus on the shortlist for Time's 2013 Person of the Year are Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Pope Francis, Iranian president Hassan Rouhani, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, NSA leaker Edward Snowden, gay rights activist Edith Windsor and 2012 winner, President Barack Obama.

Fans were able to vote for who they felt most influenced the news this year with Cyrus leading the poll at one point.. However, she ended up coming third overall, behind Egypt’s Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The decision to place Cyrus on the list was made by Time editors, who explained their decision during an appearance on the Today show on US TV yesterday (December 9).

Time managing editor Nancy Gibbs said of Cyrus, "Power is not just political. It can be cultural. It can be spiritual. Earlier this month Miley Cyrus was criticised by anti-drugs campaigners after appearing to smoke a joint onstage at the MTV EMAs in Amsterdam.

Walking on stage at the Ziggo Arena to accept the award for Best Video, which she won for the controversial promo for 'Wrecking Ball', she stopped to light a hand-rolled cigarette
