DR. BILL HESSELL ON AVOIDING NEEDLESS WARS

While one would like to believe that the ultimate power in deciding whether needless wars like that in Iraq are fought again lies with the people themselves, through the ballot box, experience lets us know this is not the case. The " people" did not lead a rush to war with Iraq, rather, they were highly reluctant supporters, being dragged into backing the administrations desire for the conflict after months of machinations, lies, arm-twisting by the war hawks pushing for the conquest. Daily street demonstrations in hundreds of cities and towns, and weekly marches by those opposing the war in many cities gave ready evidence to the mass awareness the war was being imposed by the current power structure, and was neither necessary, justified, or in keeping with the best interests of our nation. How to prevent this from happening again in the future remains an open question. When intelligence reports can be contrived, politicians can be bought and controlled, and the media channeled into reporting what is being fed to them, the imput from the citizen on the street, even if they see through the smoke screens, will carry little weight. The power structure knows the system is set up, in the final analysis, to fall in line with their needs. It may take some prodding, but they are much more experienced at pressing for their needs, than the public is at organizing and pushing for their own best interests.
